O.K. For a few years now I've been toying with the idea of not having Halloween. I've noticed that over the past 15 -20 years this particular holiday is growing more and more, well, gross and inappropiate. When you can buy a beheaded bride for $99 something is WRONG! Why must be there be so much GORE? Blood and guts have their place-in an opperating room or the morgue. But not prancing down my sidewalk. Do we really need it in our faces? What exactly about it do people consider appropiate?
Halloween used to be fun! I mean we'd make CUTE ghosts or haunted houses, have parties with way too much candy and go trick or treating at night. Even that is freaking scary these days. Have you seen these teenagers trick or treating and grabbing huge handfuls of candy and ne're speaking a word of thanks? It's disgusting. No one older than 12 should be trick or treating. Seriously! And really, when someone's porch light is off, you DON'T ring the bell people!! I've got a sleeping baby for Pete's sake!
I've revolted in my own little ways over the past few years. I don't buy a morsel of halloween candy. I buy pencils, glow sticks, key chains, stickers or other small prizes to pass out instead. I know my kids will bring home plenty of sugar without me adding to the stash. Besides, most of it gets thrown away within a month. Nobody likes the cheap candy. Don't even bother.
As for the trunk or treats, well, I like that my kids can get all they're trick or treating done in about 40 minutes or so, because let's face it, the last day in October in Utah is always freaking cold. And I'm able to pass out my treats relatively easy too. It's just that I still get those annoying kids who never even open their mouths to say "Trick or treat" or "thank you". They just hold a ginormaous pillowcase open and expect you to throw something in. Come on. Manners matter people. Halloween is quickly going down on my list.
Besides, I like decorating for fall in September. That way the autumnal theme is good clear through till Thanksgiving. Ah...Thanksgiving, now here's a holiday deserving more attention. Let us give our thanks and SHOW our thanks all year round. I love to ponder on all the many ways my life's been blessed. THAT is worth celebrating. Happy Fall!
I am behind you in protesting Halloween. It is not my favorite holiday. I don't like the customes, movies, violence, bad behavior, and candy too. My kids we are finding because of their history; candy is the worst for them. I ended up taking my kids candy and giving it away to other kids trick or treating or last year we did the trunk or treat and only did a few cars. This way it is gone within two days. This way I can control the intake of candy and control the aftermath that comes with all that candy. Candy to my kids is an addiction then to any other kids crave for the sweets. I perfer the stickers, pencils and toothbrushes. LOL
ReplyDeleteAmen to that! Thanks for speaking your mind. I couldn't agree more. :)
